A Taste of Tradition at Eckley Miners' Village Hooch Wagon Brew Fest

This past Saturday, history and hops collided in the most unforgettable way at the inaugural Hooch Wagon Brew Fest at Eckley Miners’ Village. Set against the backdrop of this beautifully preserved 19th-century coal town, the event celebrated both Pennsylvania’s rich coal mining heritage and its vibrant craft beverage scene.

Inspired by the historic “hooch wagons” that once delivered beer, cider, and spirits to patch towns across Northeastern Pennsylvania, the festival paid tribute to a bygone era when mobile merchants were a lifeline for mining families. That legacy came alive as guests wandered the village’s dirt roads and historic homes, sipping their way through unlimited tastings from a dozen regional breweries, cideries, and wineries.

The lineup offered something for every palate—from Bright Path Brewing’s crisp, traditional Hefeweizen to bold and inventive flavors like Mutant Brewing’s Banana Bread Ale. With souvenir tasting glasses in hand, attendees sampled pours while enjoying local food trucks, toe-tapping live music, and a festive, laid-back atmosphere.

Adding even more character to the day were living history demonstrations that highlighted 19th-century brewing techniques. These hands-on displays offered guests a chance to learn how brewing was once a household craft in coal country, blending perfectly with the setting’s immersive experience.

As the sun set over Eckley’s iconic company houses, it was clear that the event was about more than just great beer. It was a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and cultural preservation. Proceeds from the Hooch Wagon Brew Fest support ongoing restoration and educational programs at the village, ensuring future generations can continue to explore this unique piece of NEPA history.

If you didn’t make it this year, don’t worry—organizers say the Hooch Wagon Brew Fest is here to stay. So mark your calendar for next summer and come raise a glass to the past.
