Join the Wyoming Valley Striders Fall Races

Mark your calendars, gather your friends, and get ready for some fall running! As autumn settles in, the Wyoming Valley Striders are celebrating their 50th season with a trio of races over the next month promising exciting challenges for both distance runners and those who prefer shorter sprints, and each offering a unique experience for runners of all ages and skill levels.

October 26 – 5.5 Mile Trail Run

Join us for the 38th Annual Fall Trail 5.5 Mile Run at Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming, kicking off our fall race schedule! Since its debut in 2012, this unique age-group graded race features a staggered start, with older runners heading out first. The format creates a fun, inclusive, and competitive atmosphere for participants of all ages.

Runners participate in the fall trail 5.5 mile run at Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming, PA, with the Wyoming Valley Striders.
The 2024 Fall Trail Run begins with our older runners taking the lead in the staggered start.

The trail run offers a challenging course that invites runners to immerse themselves in nature while competing. In honor of our 50th season, one-of-a-kind anniversary medals will be awarded to the top fifteen finishers based on staggered start times, rather than “net” time, ensuring that most runners finish around the same time.

With an entry fee of just $10 and online registration only, this race is a great opportunity to challenge yourself while soaking in the natural beauty of Frances Slocum State Park.  Please note: registration closes at noon on Friday, October 24, and the race will begin an hour earlier this year, with a new start time of 11:00 a.m.

November 9 – 20K and 5K Runs

Next up is the 12th Annual 20K Run at the Susquehanna Warrior Trail in Shickshinny, which also serves as the final leg of our Vince Wojnar Triple Crown! For 18 years, the Wyoming Valley Striders 20K Classic in Wilkes-Barre was considered the area’s premier long-distance road race. However, in 1993, the race was unfortunately canceled due to traffic control issues. Fortunately, in September 2014, the Striders resurrected this historic race on the D&L Trail in Lehigh Gorge State Park, White Haven. For the last few years, this race has been held on the Susquehanna Warrior Trail.

This race gives seasoned runners the chance to push their limits while newcomers can experience the thrill of a longer distance. Plus, it’s a perfect opportunity for those participating in the Triple Crown to finish strong as they anticipate the final scores. Race starts at 9:00 a.m.

Happening alongside the 20K is our 2nd Annual 5K, starting just ten minutes after the 20K. This race is an ideal way for runners to enjoy a shorter distance while still enjoying race day amenities. Whether you’re racing against the clock or simply looking to enjoy a fun day with friends, the WVS 5K promises to be a great experience.

Each race comes with its own commemorative swag item: the 20K offers runners a hoodie, while the 5K participants will receive a t-shirt. The swag deadlines are coming up later this month, so be sure to register to secure gear! Registration for our November 9 20K and 5K runs closes Friday, November 7 at noon.
