Bell School | Restored one-room schoolhouse in Stroudsburg
Bell School in Stroudsburg, PA is a restored one-room schoolhouse maintained by the Monroe County Historical Association. Built in the 1870s in Hamilton Township, the brick school served local children who lived within a one-mile radius until 1953. It earned its name as the only school in the county with a bell in its rooftop cupola. The association purchased the building in 1964 and transformed it into an educational museum.
Today, the Bell School recreates the atmosphere of a late 19th- and early 20th-century classroom. Visitors can view historic books, artifacts and photographs that illustrate daily student life. Exhibits reflect the structure of early public education, from shared textbooks to handwritten record books. Guided tours share stories of Monroe County’s rural school system and the children who once studied there.
The school is located on Cherry Valley Road in Hamilton Township, southwest of downtown Stroudsburg. The site opens seasonally and also welcomes scheduled group tours by request. Volunteer docents provide historical interpretation during open hours.
