Today, this multi-use path offers outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels the chance to explore one of Pennsylvania’s most significant heritage corridors by foot, bike, or even cross-country skis.
Trail Access & Views
Accessible trailheads and connections to nearby state parks make the trail especially user-friendly. Thirteen designated trailheads throughout the NEPA section provide easy parking and entry points.
The trail itself is primarily flat and well-maintained, making it ideal for walking, running, cycling and seasonal activities like cross-country skiing. Along the way, users will encounter the Leigh River, shaded forest corridors, waterfalls, wildlife and charming small towns. And be sure to keep an eye out for historic remnants of the region’s industrial past like canal locks and railroad bridges. The continuous stretch from the Black Diamond Trailhead in Wright Township to the Lehigh Valley is one of the most developed and scenic portions, though trail users should expect occasional narrow paths, rocky surfaces, and road crossings.
Explore & Plan
The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor maintains the trail. In addition to the main path, two northern trail segments at Seven Tubs Recreation Area and Mountain Top are open and offer their own scenic views and recreational opportunities. Plans are in motion to connect these segments directly to historic Downtown Wilkes-Barre.
