Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails—A Scenic Multi-Use Trail in Luzerne County

Nestled in the heart of Luzerne County, the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails offers a peaceful year-round escape into nature in Greater Hazleton’s Hazle Township. Once part of the Delaware, Susquehanna, and Schuylkill rail line, this well-maintained, multi-use trail invites walkers, runners, cyclists, and winter adventurers to explore NEPA’s natural beauty on a path designed for all ages and abilities.

A Year-Round Outdoor Destination

Stretching over seven miles, the trail winds through forests, meadows, and alongside Dreck Creek Reservoir. The main segment begins at the intersection of SR 93 and SR 424 and covers four scenic miles. This flat, crushed-stone trail is stroller-friendly and bike-friendly, making it an ideal destination for families. The wide pathway also accommodates winter hikers and cross-country skiers during the snowy months.

The trail comes alive in spring with budding wildflowers, birdsong, and lush green canopies—perfect for a scenic spring hike. In fall, the surrounding forest bursts into a blaze of color, offering one of the area’s best spots for a foliage-filled walk or ride. With its mix of dense woodland and open space, every season brings new sights to enjoy.

Trail Features & Accessibility

Benches and picnic tables are scattered throughout the trail for resting or enjoying a snack, while fitness stations add an extra challenge for active visitors. The Dreck Creek Reservoir offers a serene place to pause and take in the view. An additional three-mile segment connects North Lehigh Gorge Drive to the D&L Trail, making it easy to extend your adventure.

As one of Luzerne County’s top outdoor destinations, the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails offers a safe, scenic, and accessible route to reconnect with nature, get some fresh air, and enjoy time outdoors all year long.
