Over 18,000 raptors soar over Hawk Mountain Sanctuary during the fall migration season.
This conservation area in Kempton is a hotspot for eagles, hawks, and falcons, and birders have documented about 265 species there. Grab your binoculars and hit the hiking trails to get the best views of the birds. Hawk Mountain offers trails for all skill levels, from the easy South Lookout to the rugged Golden Eagle trail. The North Lookout boasts a 70-mile view, while the River of Rocks trail passes two boulder fields.
Hawk Mountain also hosts educational workshops and lectures so you can become an expert on wildlife, birding, and ecology.
Hawk Mountain is open year-round, but the best time to spot raptors is mid-August through mid-December for the fall migration season. Spring migration runs from April through mid-May.
Accessibility
The ADA accessible Silhouette Trail leads to the South Lookout and includes a trailside exhibit. It is 900 feet long with a crushed stone surface and a grade that does not exceed 8.3%. Bench seating with pull bars are located every 100 feet.
Accessible parking is provided in all lots, and accessible van parking is located at the outdoor amphitheater. ADA compliant restrooms are available near the trail entrance gate and at the Visitor Center. A full list of accessible features is available here.
