Adventure awaits on Penobscot Mountain at the Mocanaqua Tract, a 15-mile network of loop trails located in the Pinchot State Forest in southern Luzerne County. Open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, this rugged and scenic trail system provides outdoor enthusiasts with a mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue just outside Mocanaqua, PA.
The trail system includes the 2-mile Orange Loop, 6-mile Brown Loop, 8-mile Green Loop, and 7-mile Blue Loop, all of which climb the north side of the mountain. These interconnected paths vary in length and difficulty, making the tract ideal for everything from short nature walks to longer, more challenging excursions. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Susquehanna River and the Wyoming Valley, with multiple overlooks perfect for taking in the landscape.
History buffs and curious hikers will appreciate remnants from NEPA’s hard coal era, including abandoned mining features and structures that offer a glimpse into the region’s industrial past. The area is also home to several unique rock formations that add natural interest along the way.
Parking and trail access are available at the end of Main Street in Mocanaqua, offering convenient entry into one of Luzerne County’s most engaging sections of Pinchot State Forest.
