Honoring the “Angel of the Coal Fields”

The Sophia Coxe Memorial Foundation & Education Center preserves the estate of one of Freeland’s most generous and influential citizens. Sophia Coxe, the wealthy and cultured wife of a local coal mine owner, could have easily lived a life of luxury. Instead, she gave about 90% of her income to assist coal mining families and other charitable causes.

The Foundation has restored Coxe’s historic Victorian mansion and now leads guided tours in season. Visitors can learn about Sophia’s story and the history of the anthracite coal industry in NEPA.

The Education Center also hosts events and workshops about traditional, hands-on trades like blacksmithing, engraving, spinning, weaving, sewing, art, and more.
