Sophia Coxe House in Freeland, PA preserves the legacy of one of the region’s most generous historical figures. The estate is maintained by the Sophia Coxe Memorial Foundation & Education Center. The site honors Sophia G. Coxe, remembered as the “Angel of the Coal Fields.” Her charitable work supported coal mining families and local communities throughout the region.
Sophia Coxe was the wife of coal mine owner Eckley B. Coxe. Despite her wealth, she devoted much of her life to helping others. Historical records note that she gave about ninety percent of her income to charitable causes. Her generosity helped improve the lives of families connected to the Coxe Collieries.
The restored Victorian mansion now serves as a historic site and educational destination. Guided tours introduce visitors to the story of Sophia Coxe and her family. Tours also explore the history of the anthracite coal industry in Northeastern PA. Guests learn about nearby Drifton, a mining village built by Coxe Brothers & Company.
