DiscoverNEPA is partnering with North Branch Land Trust, a nonprofit that conserves the natural, working and scenic landscapes of NEPA. They’ll provide conservation tips and give us a look at their protected lands. Learn how you can join NBLT and do your part to protect NEPA’s natural resources.

North Branch Land Trust’s Name is Inspired by the North Branch of the Susquehanna River.

As a nonprofit, NBLT depends on the support of the Northeastern Pennsylvania community to continue their mission of land and water conservation for the future and benefit of all Pennsylvanians. One of NBLT’s long-time supporters, Five Mountain Outfitters, provides plenty of opportunities for sustainable recreation.

Five Mountain Outfitters specializes in kayak sales and rentals, shuttles, family river float trips, fishing gear, fly fishing, and kayaking gear. Owner and avid angler Brian Swingle has been following his passion of helping the community since the shop opened in April 2017 and looks to continue this tradition. “Five Mountain Outfitters Co. was established in 2017 and has become a full-service kayak and fishing shop. Kayak rentals are available during the warmer months. We also offer hand-tied flies and other fly-fishing items. Fishing items include rods, reels, hard and soft baits as well as live bait. Kayak brands include Old Town, Nucanoe and Crescent, Kayak accessories include paddles, PFD’s and many other items. Please stop in, say hello and see just what we have to offer.”

Located right on the Susquehanna River in Shickshinny, PA, the store sits nestled in the valley of beautiful Northeastern Pennsylvania where five mountains meet. North Branch Land Trust continues to recognize his work and support towards their stewardship and outdoor recreation initiatives.

Swingle said, “Five Mountain Outfitters and myself are 100% committed to promoting fun and sustainable outdoor recreation whether it be kayaking, kayak fishing, camping, hiking, biking, fishing or simply going for a walk on a beautiful day.  It’s vital for our bodies and minds to enjoy the outdoors because taking part in outdoor recreation supports an active and healthy lifestyle, which has shown to increase life expectancy, improve sleep quality…. the positive list is almost endless.”

Swingle has long supported the work of the North Branch Land Trust by donating kayaking rentals and encouraging people to get outdoors. When asked why he would keep up the partnership for so long, Swingle offered, “Your mission sums it all up ‘to conserve the natural, working, and scenic landscapes in Northeastern Pennsylvania that enrich our lives.’”

And Brian Swingle knows well how enriching our local outdoors can be.

“My recommendation for a NEPA staycation is very simple, NEPA is a beautiful region that offers a massive list of outdoor activities that touches on every season.  Try something new…. try kayaking the beautiful Susquehanna River, try camping, hiking, fishing, skiing.  Just get out and enjoy life… Life Is Good.”

“North Branch Land Trust is grateful for the ongoing support of our Mission by Five Mountain Outfitters and the entire NEPA community whose passion for conserving and appreciating our natural resources makes our region a wonderful place to live, work and play.” said Ellen Ferretti, Executive Director.
