Educational Workshop Teaches Skills for Kayaking the Susquehanna River

There’s no question—the Susquehanna River is one of Pennsylvania’s greatest natural treasures. Stretching across the state, the river offers stunning views and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. In recent years, interest in paddling, hiking, and biking along this scenic waterway has surged. Yet, for many would-be adventurers, knowing where to start or how to plan a safe and enjoyable outing remains a challenge.

Exploring NEPA’s Rivers

Enter the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership (SGP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people with the Susquehanna Greenway—a growing network of trails, parks, and communities along the river corridor. SGP’s mission is to ensure that more people can access and enjoy the outdoors by providing the resources, tools, and programming needed to make that happen.

This month, SGP is teaming up with the Pennsylvania Master Naturalist (PMN) to offer a two-part educational program designed to empower both new and seasoned paddlers: the Paddler’s Toolkit Workshop. The workshop is set to take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025, beginning at the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock, PA.

The day begins with an indoor presentation session led by experts from SGP and PMN

Participants will learn essential paddling skills and planning strategies, including gear selection, navigation, safety, permits, packing, and minimal impact practices. PMN’s portion of the workshop will dive into naturalist topics like plant and wildlife identification, local geology, river history, and conservation—designed to enrich the paddling experience and foster environmental stewardship.

After a provided lunch, attendees will take to the river with SGP and PMN staff for a guided half-day paddle on the Susquehanna. This practical session will allow participants to apply what they’ve learned, while enjoying a stretch of the North Branch’s scenic water trail. The route will begin at Vosburg Neck State Park and end at Riverside Park. Kayak rentals are available, and all necessary equipment—life jackets and paddles included—can be provided for those who don’t have their own gear.
