Penobscot Ridge Mountain Bike Trail | Reclaimed landscapes & scenic ridgelines in Nanticoke

The Penobscot Ridge Mountain Bike Trail in Nanticoke is a 1.6-mile scenic trail developed by Earth Conservancy. Once a mine-scarred area, the land has been carefully reclaimed and restored into a welcoming outdoor space within the Pinchot State Forest. Today, the trail winds through 1,557 acres of meadows, forests, and ridge-top vistas—offering hikers and mountain bikers a peaceful and rewarding ride through Luzerne County.

Trail Terrain & Experience

The main trail is moderate in difficulty, beginning with a steady climb before leveling out along the ridgeline. Although some sections are rocky and steep, the path opens up to scenic valley views and stretches of open woodland. It’s well-suited for both hiking and mountain biking, including families looking for an accessible adventure. In addition to the official route, many unofficial side trails offer extra opportunities for exploration.

Trailheads, Access & Amenities

Two trailheads provide easy entry: the western trailhead off West Main Street and the eastern trailhead off West Kirmar Avenue near Reservoir Creek. Both locations offer parking and picnic areas for day use. From I-81, take Exit 164 to S.R. 29, then Exit 2B (Alden) to South Valley Parkway. Follow the road to Middle Road, which becomes Kirmar Avenue.

Dawn-to-Dusk Outdoor Access

The trail is open daily from dawn to dusk. With its combination of rolling meadows, wooded paths, and restored natural features, Penobscot Ridge provides a refreshing, nature-filled experience for visitors of all skill levels.
