Celebrating 115 Years of Education & Enlightenment in 2023!

The Everhart’s busy winter schedule starts in February.

After a busy 2022 of exhibitions, educational programs, and events, The Everhart Museum will take the month of January off (as we do every year) to close to the public and prepare for an even better 2023 — our 115th anniversary! Everhart 115 will provide a full slate of experiences in natural history, science, and art. And we’re excited to welcome the community back to share in the fun.

The 2023 exhibition schedule is as robust as ever with eight new shows and many related events. It starts as the Museum reopens February 2 with the Scholastic Art Gold Key Exhibition. The exhibit showcases the artistic talent of high school students throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and is open through February 26. Students Grades 7–12 partake in a juried competition to earn special awards, scholarships, spots in the Gold Key exhibition at the Everhart. They can even earn opportunities to compete on the state and national Scholastic levels.

Upcoming Exhibits

Opening on February 2 as well and on view long term is Works on Paper, a regularly-changing show highlighting selections from the Everhart’s rich collection of ink sketches, charcoal drawings, engravings, etches, photographs, and more.

Women in Art rounds out the winter schedule of exhibition openings as we celebrate Women’s History Month. Open March 2 through the summer, this show highlights works from the Everhart’s collections depicting and created by women.

Jon Carsman: Changing Frequencies, which opened this past November is open through the spring. The show highlights Wilkes-Barre, PA native Jon Carsman’s (1944–1987) distinctive silkscreens as well as his acrylic, pen, and watercolor works. Many of the works were inspired by the natural landscape and architecture of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It also includes many items of personal memorabilia that give insight into Carsman’s life.

Educational Opportunities

This year, the Everhart is introducing a series of family workshops associated with monthly observances, starting in February with Black History Month. For February, guest artist Travis Prince will lead a painting workshop exploring themes of black culture in America. The next few months of sessions will also include a Women’s History Month-themed workshop in March with illustrator Lindsay Barrett George. We’re also planning a plant and gardening workshop for National Gardening Month in April. This series is open for both families and individuals, and registration opens soon! Check our monthly family workshops page for updates.

The Museum is continuing its Adventure Toolkit program to provide free kits that bring natural history, science, and art to classrooms throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. Last year, over 600 kits were delivered to classrooms in neighboring counties. Interested educators can visit our toolkits page for more information on the program and to register.
