Center for Landscape Design & Stewardship’s mission is to provide a space for gardeners who do not have access to a garden at their residence. We are an organic garden and promote sustainable gardening practices. We believe that by working together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future for everyone.
Center for Landscape & Design Stewardship | Growing Skills & Sustainability in Drums
The Center for Landscape & Design Stewardship (CLDS), a nonprofit organization based in Drums, PA, empowers individuals of all ages to engage in sustainable gardening and ecological learning. Run entirely by volunteers, CLDS manages the Butler Township Community Garden at Freedom Park, where nearly 100 garden plots are available for local families to rent and cultivate their own fresh, healthy food. The organization encourages hands-on learning, community participation, and environmentally responsible practices that promote long-term food security and stewardship of the land.
Educational Opportunities Rooted in Experience
Through its demonstration and teaching gardens, CLDS hosts a range of educational workshops designed to foster ecological awareness and garden skills in both children and adults. Topics include composting, soil health, native plants, and pollinator support. These programs provide accessible knowledge that empowers community members to grow sustainably at home and in shared spaces. CLDS’s all-ages approach ensures that the lessons of environmental responsibility are passed from one generation to the next.
Youth Internships That Cultivate Growth
One of the organization’s signature initiatives is the Growing Markets internship, a hands-on experience that teaches students how to grow, harvest, and sell their own produce. This program provides valuable life skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, while also encouraging young people to take pride in their work and understand the value of local food systems.
