Ultimate Riding Experiences at Moon Lake
A mountain bike [MTB] destination that has quickly risen to become one of my favorite NEPA riding spots is Moon Lake State Forest Recreation Area. After 17 years of living and riding in NEPA, I haven’t found anything else nearby quite like it. Moon Lake hooked me from my very first ride at the park and has kept me coming back ever since. As someone who relocated to NEPA, I believe part of what makes mountain biking here so special is the unique character of each trail system.
Extensive Trail Network
Minutes from Wilkes-Barre, over 20 miles of single-track trail lie within the park’s boundaries, offering one of the most diverse MTB trail systems in the area. For those of us who frequent the trails at Moon, we know how fortunate we are to have this 942-acre “hidden gem” right in our backyard. The terrain can be as challenging as you make it; feeling like taking it easy? Fine. Take a cruise up or down the “Moonshine” trail. Feeling like pushing your limits? Moon has what you need! Head for the “Burts,” “Nightmare,” “Deacon,” “NFS,” and “5858” trails. Feeling tough? Climb “5858” without putting a foot down!
Known for its “technical” riding, Moon Lake boasts trails filled with rocks, roots, climbs, descents, and twisty, challenging terrain to navigate on your bike. It also offers some flowy trails and access roads. You’ll find riders of all ability levels, regardless of the time of day or the season. Day rides, night rides, sunny and warm, or cold and snowy—we’re out there!
Moon draws in local riders and those from afar. It’s well-known within the MTB community for being both fun and challenging. I’m fortunate to have this place so close to home; it has allowed me to progress and grow in the sport. I’ve mastered numerous bike maneuvering skills and met many new friends. The “T-Rex rock garden” was a nemesis of mine for years, but now I cruise through it as if it’s smooth dirt. It’s so fun to reflect on. I started in this sport by dismounting and walking up the hills, but now you’ll find me at the front of the pack, charging up the hills and blasting through the techy sections of trails, always looking for the nearest rock to jump or huck myself from.
Group cycling adventures
Another great thing about Moon is the group rides, which are held at the park on a weekly basis. Come out on Friday evenings at 6 p.m. to join the fun! As we head into the Fall 2024 season, make sure to bring your lights since the rides will end in the dark as daylight gets shorter. The group is encouraging, patient, and always welcoming to new riders.
One of my favorite experiences with the sport has been the sense of community. Now that I’ve advanced as a rider, I can help others get into the sport. Watching people step outside their comfort zones and seeing the expressions on their faces when they conquer a challenge is so rewarding. Along the way, I’ve made lifelong friends from various backgrounds and ages. The common interest in mountain biking has bonded us all. I hope to see you out there!
