Embark on an Underground Adventure

Take a tour of a real anthracite coal mine at Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train in Ashland. You’ll board a mining car and travel 1,800 feet into the side of Mahanoy Mountain. Your guide will explain the mining process and show you around the tunnel. This 35-minute tour is handicap accessible and appropriate for all ages.

There’s plenty to explore above ground too! Take a ride on the Henry Clay, a narrow-gauge steam train from the 1920s. You’ll take a ride around the mountain, see the Mammoth Vein, and learn about strip mining.

After the tour, grab a snack from the Jellybucket Café and stop by the gift shop.

Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train is open seasonally from April through October. Call or check online for operating hours. You can purchase tickets at the mine or book them in advance online.
