Mission Statement
Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation’s mission is to preserve the natural beauty of Lake Lacawac, its watershed and surrounding lands; to conduct long-term research on natural systems as part of a global effort to understand and protect the Earth’s biodiversity; and to increase appreciation of this effort through innovative, field-based educational programs for students, teachers, and the community.

Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation is a nonprofit environmental education center, nature preserve, and biological field station located in Lake Ariel, PA near Lake Wallenpaupack. Spanning 550 acres of protected land in the Northern Poconos, the sanctuary offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore diverse ecosystems while supporting conservation and scientific research.
Outdoor Education & Public Programs
Lacawac’s public programs connect people of all ages with nature through hands-on environmental education. From guided hikes and wildlife programs to school field trips and seasonal events, the sanctuary fosters environmental responsibility, inclusiveness, and scientific curiosity. Trails through wetlands, forests, meadows, and glacial lakes offer rich educational experiences year-round.
Supporting Science & Research
Lacawac also serves as a biological field station and research hub through partnerships with regional colleges and universities. Undergraduate students and faculty conduct fieldwork and environmental studies on-site, gaining access to pristine habitats ideal for long-term ecological research and education.
