Mission Statement
The Weinberg Food Bank, run by the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO), is a regional food bank servicing charitable organizations by providing food to alleviate hunger and promote proper nutrition. The mission of CEO is to promote self-sufficiency among low-income and vulnerable populations by confronting the causes and reducing the effects of poverty.
The CEO/Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank distributes nutritious food to Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties. The food bank partners with over 160 agencies, including food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, faith-based organizations and nonprofits. In turn, the agencies distribute the food to those in need.
The Weinberg Food Bank focuses on proper nutrition, especially for children and senior citizens. They go beyond canned goods and collect fresh produce, meats and dairy. They also run after-school programs and summer programs. A special Thanksgiving distribution ensures that everyone has a meal for the holidays.
