Mission Statement

The mission of the Lackawanna Historical Society is to collect, preserve and interpret the artifacts, archives and bibliographic materials of the social, cultural and economic history of Lackawanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Lackawanna Historical Society | Preserving Stories & Heritage in Scranton

The Lackawanna Historical Society, a nonprofit organization founded in 1886 and headquartered in Scranton, PA, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Lackawanna County. With a mission to preserve, interpret, and share the region’s rich history, the Society offers a variety of resources to the public, including a museum, research library, rotating exhibits, guided tours, and engaging programs for all ages. Their extensive collections include artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, and ephemera dating from the 1700s to the present day, offering a comprehensive look at the area’s evolving identity.

A Historic Home for Local History

The Society is located at the Catlin House, a Tudor Revival mansion built in 1912, which serves as both its headquarters and museum. This stately residence provides the perfect backdrop for exploring regional stories of industry, immigration, innovation, and everyday life. Through exhibits and special events hosted within this architectural gem, the organization brings local history to life in an intimate and engaging setting.

Community Support & Regional Programming

In addition to its museum and library, the Lackawanna Historical Society conducts walking tours, lectures, and educational programs across the region, fostering a deeper appreciation for local heritage. Its work is supported by individual members, the broader community, and key partners including the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission and Lackawanna County. Their efforts ensure that the cultural and historical fabric of the region remains preserved and accessible for generations to come.

The Lackawanna Historical Society preserves and promotes the history of Scranton and beyond through collections, education, and community engagement from the Catlin House.
