Ashland Community Enterprises is a nonprofit organization in Ashland, PA, dedicated to preserving and sharing the region’s rich anthracite coal heritage through its signature attraction—Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train. Operating since 1962, this long-standing educational destination offers immersive experiences that transport visitors into the heart of NEPA’s industrial past through guided mine tours and historic steam train rides.
Underground Exploration & Living History
The Coal Mine Tour takes guests 1,800 feet into the side of Mahoney Mountain aboard a battery-operated mine car, offering a rare look at the inner workings of a real anthracite mine. Visitors learn about mining techniques, the dangers faced by coal miners, bootleg operations, and the intricate design of underground gangways—all brought to life by knowledgeable guides sharing stories of resilience and innovation.
Scenic Steam Train Ride with Historic Insights
The second attraction, a ¾-mile ride aboard the restored 1927 narrow-gauge steam locomotive—Lehigh Valley Coal Company #123—offers breathtaking views along the mountainside.
