Race into the New Year on the Back Mountain Trail
Mark your calendars for the fourth annual Back Mountain Trail 5K, returning on December 31 in Luzerne. This popular holiday event has become a cherished New Year’s Eve tradition in NEPA, allowing families to participate in a fun, festive experience while giving back to our community.
The 5K route kicks off in downtown Luzerne, where participants will weave past the town’s charming shops and restaurants, beautifully illuminated with holiday lights and decorations. From there, the course transitions onto the mostly flat and scenic Back Mountain Trail, a rail-trail route that stretches toward Trucksville and Dallas.
“I love being involved with this event. It brings so much joy to the area. I love how it includes the Borough of Luzerne and its merchants, the running community, families from the Back Mountain and of course the nonprofits that we are able to support because of this event.”
Race into the New Year
Last year, a record-breaking 758 runners gathered in this quaint community nestled between Kingston and Dallas and organizers expect even more this year. With a start time of 4 p.m., the event allows participants to celebrate the year’s end with a healthy activity before heading to their New Year’s Eve festivities. A lively DJ, a festive atmosphere and the camaraderie of racers of all ages makes this a perfect way to close out the year.
One of the highlights of the event is the coveted race hoodie, designed and donated by Wet Paint Printing + Design. Participants who register by Monday, December 23, are guaranteed this keepsake. But beyond the fun and fashion, the race’s impact on the community is truly remarkable.
Running for a Cause
In 2023, the Back Mountain Trail 5K raised $28,000 benefitting 18 local nonprofits. To date, they’ve raised a total of $73,000. This year, race organizers hope to surpass that amount, with all proceeds going toward local causes. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, prefer to walk the route, or are just looking for a festive family activity, the Back Mountain Trail 5K is a perfect way to end 2024.
