Celebrate Thanksgiving Tradition at the Run For The Diamonds in Berwick

Run For The Diamonds, held every Thanksgiving morning in Berwick, is one of the oldest and most iconic road races in the country. This year’s race takes place Thursday, November 27, at 10 a.m. in Downtown Berwick. Since 1908, this hometown tradition has turned Thanksgiving Day into something a little more exciting — part history, part endurance test and all Berwick pride.

What started with just 13 runners has grown into a field of more than 2,000 athletes ready to take on the challenging 9-mile course. In its 116-year run, the race has become as much a part of Thanksgiving as turkey and pumpkin pie. Whether you’re racing or watching, the Run For The Diamonds is a Thanksgiving tradition that’s uniquely Berwick.

This year’s competition brings plenty of excitement too, with a $3,000 cash prize up for grabs for any male or female runner who breaks the course record. The top finishers — first through seventh place — take home diamond rings and pendants, while those finishing eighth through fifteenth earn commemorative plaques.

Five racers, including a women dress in a turkey hat, t-shirt and socks, run on the street.

Race Route

The Run For The Diamonds course offers runners a scenic and challenging tour of Berwick and the surrounding countryside. Spanning 9.2 miles, the route has remained largely unchanged for decades, preserving the race’s historic charm and reputation as a true test of endurance.

  • The race begins on Market Street in Downtown Berwick.
  • Runners head north before turning onto Summerhill Road, which becomes Foundryville Road as it passes through Foundryville.
  • Around mile 2, participants face the race’s most famous climb — a long, steep stretch known as “The Hill.”
  • After cresting the summit near mile 3.5, the course winds downhill along Kachinka Hollow Road and continues to Martzville Road at mile 7.
  • The final mile brings runners back to Market Street, where cheering crowds and post-race festivities await in Downtown Berwick.
