Bear Creek Preserve | Scenic Trails & Wildlife in Bear Creek

Bear Creek Preserve in Bear Creek is one of Luzerne County’s premier outdoor destinations, offering a true nature escape just 15 miles from Wilkes-Barre. Spanning nearly 4,000 acres, this Natural Lands preserve features over 9 miles of hiking trails that range from short loops to challenging treks. With its mix of forests, streams, and overlooks, the preserve has become a favorite spot for hiking, birding, and photography in every season of NEPA.

Hiking & Scenic Views

The preserve’s trails wind through peaceful woodlands, across streams, and past hidden waterfalls. Scenic overlooks of the Lehigh River reward hikers with panoramic views, especially breathtaking during fall foliage. Wildlife is abundant, from bald eagles and ospreys overhead to deer, bobcats, and even the rare northern flying squirrel in the woods. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy spotting scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings, and warblers among many species of concern.

Natural Beauty & Conservation

Bear Creek Preserve is home to diverse plant communities and thriving habitats. Summer brings vibrant mountain laurel blooms, while blueberries and other native plants sustain birds and wildlife. Its three streams—Shades Creek, Bear Creek, and Stony Run—are classified as high-quality cold-water fisheries, contributing to clean water throughout the region. The preserve remains a vital part of a 150,000-acre protected landscape of state parks, gamelands, and natural areas.

Planning Your Visit

The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, Tuesday through Sunday, with dogs permitted on leashes. Free parking is available at multiple trailheads, though cell service is limited. Visitors can join guided walks, birding treks, and seasonal programs hosted by Natural Lands. ATVs and mountain bikes are prohibited to protect sensitive ecosystems.

With year-round access, diverse trails, and thriving habitats, Bear Creek Preserve in Bear Creek delivers one of NEPA’s most rewarding outdoor experiences.
