When you need a break from the bustle of the city, escape into nature at Bear Creek Preserve, located just 15 miles from Wilkes-Barre. This nature preserve, owned and managed by nonprofit Natural Lands, spans nearly 4,000 acres and boasts more than 9 miles of trails, from an easy, mile-long stroll to more challenging treks.

Along the way, you’ll pass pristine waterfalls and scenic overlooks along the Lehigh River. You might even be lucky enough to spot the bald eagles and ospreys that often nest in the area. And be sure to visit in the summer when the forests are painted pink with native mountain laurel blooms.

Check out the events page for guided nature walks, birding treks, and many other events.

Dogs are welcome, and leashes are required at all times. No ATVs or mountain bikes. Bear Creek Preserve is open from sunrise to sunset year-round.
