D&H Rail-Trail: Explore Pennsylvania’s 2021 Trail of the Year
Stretching 38 scenic miles from Simpson to the New York state border, the D&H Rail-Trail winds through the heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains. Recognized as Pennsylvania’s 2021 Trail of the Year by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), this historic trail offers a peaceful, picturesque escape into nature and a unique glimpse into the region’s rich railroading past.
A Journey Through NEPA’s Scenic Countryside
Following the path of the former Delaware and Hudson Railroad, the D&H Rail-Trail traces the Lackawanna River through forests and farmland, past the Stillwater Dam, and into the quiet beauty of Wayne and Susquehanna Counties. It’s a favorite destination for hikers, runners, and cyclists, and serves as one of the most beloved NEPA bike trails for its accessible terrain of ballast, cinder, and hard-packed earth. Certain sections are also open to horseback riding and snowmobiling, making the trail a true four-season destination.
Unforgettable Fall Hikes in the Endless Mountains
Fall in the Endless Mountains brings the landscape to life with brilliant foliage, making the D&H Rail-Trail one of the top NEPA fall hikes. The vibrant colors, crisp mountain air, and peaceful views provide an unforgettable autumn adventure. Along the way, keep your eyes open for wildlife, historic rail markers, and one of the NEPA’s most breathtaking sights—the trail offers distant views of the iconic Starrucca Viaduct, a soaring 19th-century stone bridge that remains one of the most impressive feats of engineering in Pennsylvania.
Gateway to Endless Outdoor Adventures
The D&H Rail-Trail is also a great jumping-off point for exploring the many outdoor activities in the Endless Mountains region—from paddling and fishing in nearby rivers and lakes to exploring local parks, scenic overlooks, and charming small towns that welcome trail users with warm hospitality.
The Rail-Trail Council of NEPA, headquartered near the Union Dale trailhead, maintains and improves the D&H Rail-Trail, ensuring it remains a treasured outdoor destination for locals and visitors alike.
