The Gravel Family Nature Preserve in Barrett Township, located off Route 447 near Canadensis, is a 179-acre property of the Brodhead Watershed Association, dedicated to protecting land and waterways while providing the community with access to the outdoors. Open daily from dawn to dusk, the preserve provides a peaceful escape for hikers, families, and nature enthusiasts looking for a quick walk in the woods. Visitors can park at the trailhead just off Route 447 North near Canadensis. The lot accommodates about 20 cars and includes porta-potties for convenience before your hike.
Pets are welcome too, as long as they remain leashed. The preserve is also home to the Barrett Township Dog Park, giving furry friends a safe and spacious area to run, play, and socialize before or after hitting the trails. Once you’re ready, pass through the metal gate and follow the blue, red, and yellow trail markers.
Trails & Terrain
The preserve’s two-mile trail is an out-and-back loop with easy to moderate footing. While short in distance, it offers surprising variety. Hikers will pass through grassy old fields, shaded forests, and open wetlands, with stretches of rocky or damp ground underfoot. Along the way, steep slopes climb nearly 2,000 feet toward the nearby Mount Wismer Preserve. Hiking boots are strongly recommended, and less experienced hikers may find a walking stick helpful for balance.

In summer, blueberry bushes line the trail, offering a tasty bonus for sharp-eyed hikers. The preserve is also a great spot for observing seasonal changes, from vibrant fall foliage to the fresh growth of spring.
