Jackson Mansion | Civil War legacy & Victorian elegance in Berwick

Jackson Mansion in Berwick is a historic Victorian home that tells the remarkable story of Colonel Clarence G. Jackson, a decorated Civil War veteran and respected local leader. Constructed between 1877 and 1879, the mansion was built for Colonel Jackson, his wife Elizabeth Seybert, and their two daughters. This grand residence, complete with an original carriage house, showcases the legacy of one of Berwick’s most prominent 19th-century families.

Born in Berwick in 1842, Clarence Jackson was a scholar and soldier who graduated with honors from Dickinson College before enlisting in the Union Army. He fought in major battles including Chancellorsville and the Wilderness, surviving two captures and imprisonment at Richmond’s notorious Libby Prison. After the war, Jackson returned home, served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and became vice president of the Jackson and Woodin Manufacturing Company. He died unexpectedly in 1880 at just 38 years old.

Today, visitors can tour the restored mansion and admire its period architecture, furnishings, and historical exhibits. Guided tours are offered from April through December on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Ross & Boone Gift Shoppe located just behind the mansion. Special events are also held throughout the year on the mansion grounds.

Jackson Mansion preserves Berwick’s Civil War-era history while inviting guests to explore one of the region’s most treasured landmarks.
