Lehigh and New England Trail | Scenic Rail-Trail in Tamaqua

Lehigh and New England Trail in Tamaqua, PA offers a 2.7-mile rail-trail ideal for hiking and biking. This crushed stone and dirt path follows the former Lehigh and New England Railroad corridor just south of Tamaqua. As a result, visitors enjoy a relatively flat route with a blend of history and scenery.

A lush tree canopy lines much of the trail and separates it from nearby Route 309. Along the way, interpretive signage near the Dairy Road trailhead shares details about the corridor’s past. Midway through the trail, visitors can spot the remains of the Shellhamer Ice Dam, once a recreation and entertainment complex.

The surface supports walking, brisk hiking and mountain biking. In addition, the trail accommodates cross-country skiing during snowy conditions. Because the route remains mostly level, it works well for quick outings and warm-up rides. Those seeking a longer adventure can connect their day with the nearby Schuylkill Valley Heritage Trail.

Parking is available at the southern trailhead off Dairy Road. Visitors should use caution at road crossings, especially where grades are steep.

Lehigh and New England Trail in Tamaqua delivers a short, historic rail-trail experience for hikers and bikers alike.
