Lehigh Gorge State Park | Rugged River Adventure Through NEPA’s Natural Beauty
Lehigh Gorge State Park offers a rugged and scenic landscape for outdoor adventure in NEPA. Stretching from White Haven to Jim Thorpe through Luzerne and Carbon counties, the park is one of NEPA’s 18 state parks, and follows the whitewater-filled path of the Lehigh River. With stunning natural features, rich history and countless ways to enjoy the outdoors, Lehigh Gorge State Park is a favorite destination for hikers, bikers, paddlers and anglers alike.
Whitewater Thrills and River Recreation
The Lehigh River is one of NEPA’s top spots for whitewater rafting. The river’s rapids attract paddlers from across the region, with local river outfitters offering guided trips that include gear and shuttle service. Adventurous kayakers and rafters often launch near the Francis E. Walter Dam and follow the river’s course south through the park. While the Glen Onoko Falls Trail is permanently closed to hikers as of May 1, 2019, the area remains a scenic landmark along the river route.
Hiking, Biking and Winter Sports on the Lehigh Gorge Trail
The 26-mile Lehigh Gorge Trail runs through the park on a former rail bed. This flat, crushed-stone trail is a favorite for hikers and bikers looking for an easy, scenic route with views of the gorge, waterfalls and relics from the area’s coal-mining past, including the historic Lehigh Canal. In winter, the trail transforms into a snowmobiling route for cold-weather recreation.
Fishing and Scenic Views
The Lehigh River is also a popular fishing spot, particularly during trout season. Stocked each spring, the river and nearby streams provide excellent conditions for anglers. With its mix of dramatic river views, recreational access and historical charm, Lehigh Gorge State Park is a true NEPA outdoor gem and a favorite amongst the Pocono Mountain state parks.
Lehigh Gorge State Park blends natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and Pocono Mountains history into one unforgettable NEPA destination.
