Messimer Preserve | Wooded trails & creekside access near Lackawanna State Park

Tucked along the banks of Tunkhannock Creek, the Messimer Preserve offers a peaceful 75-acre escape ideal for hiking and fishing. Managed by the Countryside Conservancy, this quiet forest preserve features a gently winding 1.5-mile trail that follows the creek and connects directly into Lackawanna State Park. The preserve’s location offers opportunities for visitors looking to extend their adventure.

The trail is mostly flat, making it accessible for walkers of all ages and a great option for a casual hike or nature walk. As you make your way through the dense forest and along the water’s edge, you’ll be treated to views of Tunkhannock Creek, wildlife sightings, and the soothing sounds of flowing water. It’s also a great access point for fishing and water recreation on the creek.

Hunting is permitted on the Messimer section of the preserve with a special permit from the Countryside Conservancy. These measures ensure the land remains protected while still providing space for responsible outdoor use. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. It serves as a welcoming destination for those seeking a quiet outing in nature with the added convenience of trail access to nearby parkland.
