Scranton Cultural Center Restoration Brings New Life to a NEPA Landmark

The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple in downtown Scranton is celebrating a major milestone in the restoration of the entire building, including its historic Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Theatre. This latest phase has brought the 1930s landmark back to life, with refreshed plasterwork, restored architectural details, new acoustic ceiling tiles, and careful cleaning and repainting that highlight the building’s original character. Alongside the work inside the Weinberg, Shopland Hall and the Grand Ballroom have also received upgrades, and exterior restoration is well underway, with completion expected by April 2026.

The transformation comes as the Scranton Cultural Center and the Broadway Theatre League of NEPA officially merge after decades of partnership, uniting two longtime arts leaders under one roof. The combined organization strengthens programming, supports touring productions, and ensures the continued preservation of this historic space.

As the Weinberg Theatre reopens, the Cultural Center is welcoming audiences back with Sesame Street Live! Elmo & Friends Say Hello on November 20, followed by six performances of Six the musical from November 21–23.
