A Night Full of Food, Music, and Motorheads
Last night we decided to head over to Laurel Run, PA. For those of you who may not know, Laurel Run is a little town with a long history. In fact it is home to one of the oldest motorsport events in the country: The Giants Despair Hill Climb.
Since 1906, car enthusiasts have been racing their souped up vehicles up the steep and windy one-mile course on East Northampton Street. With six profound turns, including the infamous “Devils Elbow”, drivers speed to the top in hopes of obtaining the best time. The driver with the best time is deemed the winner and is given unlimited bragging rights… at least until the following year.
The event is organized by the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association (PHA) and is open to the public. Though the two-day race doesn’t officially start until Saturday (today), all were welcome to the pre-party Friday night. And, of course, we couldn’t resist the invite.
The Giants Despair Hillclimb Musicfest is somewhat of a newer addition to hillclimb weekend and feels more like a backyard party with family and friends. And after engaging in a few conversations with the crowd, it was apparent that many look forward to the event all year. We continued to walk around snapping pics with our camera and even grabbed a quick bite from Woss Hogs, (highly recommend the chili dog). Billie Fink & The Georgetown Outlaws opened the night with some classic rock and Bonejak carried the party into the night. And, of course, we couldn’t help but stop by the paddock to sneak a peek at some of the cars before we left.
Overall, we had a great time with great people, music and food and highly encourage you to check out the main event happening today. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
Racing runs all day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 & Sunday, July 9.
