Local Breweries Lighten the Mood with Tasty Spring Beers

Bring on the longer, warmer days. Put away the puffy jackets, snow shovels and salt-crusted boots. It’s time to feed the soul with green hillsides, chirping birdies, budding trees, baseball and, of course, spring beers. We got around to a few, beloved NEPA brewhouses to see what’s on tap this season. Check out this list of local spring brews.

Old Oak – Gratzer Style

Smoked Wheat Ale / ABV: 3%

“An old-world beer style, originated in Poland and popular in parts of Germany. Nearly extinct, but thanks to the craft beer scene, it’s making a bit of a comeback. Characteristically a light-colored beer, brewed exclusively with oak smoked wheat malt, for an assertive smokiness. Low alcohol, coming in at 3%, prominent hop presence throughout, using German and Czech hops for a mild, herbal character. Very clean and surprisingly refreshing. A unique beer from days of the past.”

“Brewed in honor of our Brewer Emeritus’ wife, Red Plague is a sessionable & traditional Irish Red Ale.  It has a hearty body painted by strong strokes of Malta and toffee with a small peck of roastiness. Nothing is more romantic than a prince running away from death.”

American Blonde

Blonde Ale / ABV: 5.0%

“Bringing back an old classic for our 15th Anniversary. We originally made this as a light, session addition to an afternoon of golfing, and this idea still rings true. This recipe is all about drinkability, made with 100% American grown and malted pilsner with a light touch of Comet hops grown in Michigan. Cheers to 15 years of making grew brews.”
