Bishop Memorial Library & Archives | Historic research center in Wilkes-Barre
Bishop Memorial Library & Archives in Wilkes-Barre, PA houses the Luzerne County Historical Society’s extensive library and archival collections. Built in 1876 and designed by architect Willis O. Hale, the historic residence was acquired through the bequest of Elma C. and Bessie Bishop. Today, the building serves as a dedicated research center preserving the people, industries and stories of Luzerne County.
Visitors will find one of the most comprehensive local history collections in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Holdings include Luzerne County books, historic maps, manuscript collections, newspapers, microfilm and thousands of photographs. Materials are non-circulating and available for on-site research by appointment. Staff provide research assistance for genealogy projects, academic work and local history inquiries.
The Bishop Memorial Library & Archives is open by appointment Tuesday through Saturday and is closed on major holidays. A public restroom and gift shop are available onsite. Metered street parking and nearby public garages serve visitors. Due to the building’s historic structure, the facility is not handicapped accessible.
