Central Park | History, Gatherings & Green Space in Honesdale

From summer hangouts to historic traditions, Honesdale’s Central Park is at the very heart of town—both in location and in spirit. Situated at the center of Honesdale, the park has long been the backdrop for community memories, celebrations, and local events throughout the year.

Day-to-day, the park provides a welcoming space for friends and families. Its wide, open lawns and two children’s play areas make it a perfect spot for playdates and casual get-togethers. Parents and visitors can take a walk along the park’s pathways or relax on benches and picnic tables near the iconic fountain.  It’s also a dog-friendly park, so furry companions are always part of the fun.

Central Park has deep roots in local history. Established in 1840 as the town’s original public square, it has hosted milestone events for generations. By the late 1800s, it evolved into the park residents enjoy today. The fountain, built to mark America’s centennial celebration, still stands as a picturesque centerpiece. Music lovers will also appreciate its cultural significance: lyricist Richard Smith found inspiration for the holiday favorite “Winter Wonderland” from his snowy days playing in the park.

Today, the park continues to shine as a gathering space. From ceremonies to concerts, it remains a hub for community connection. A highlight is the Summer Concert Series each June and July, when residents spread out with chairs and blankets to enjoy weekly free performances.

Central Park in Honesdale is both a historic landmark and a lively community space for all ages.
