Rev. Jozef Murgaš Room in Wilkes-Barre, PA is a dedicated space at King’s College that celebrates one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s most remarkable trailblazers. The room honors Father Jozef Murgaš, a revered priest whose work reached far beyond the pulpit. He is remembered as a priest, scientist, botanist, artist and statesman. The display highlights his wide-ranging achievements and preserves his story for students, visitors and the public.
Artifacts, Displays & Murgaš’s Legacy
During the early 20th century, Murgaš made major contributions to wireless broadcasting technology. In 1905, he established communication between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton across a 20-mile span. His work played an important role in the development of modern radio transmissions.
The Rev. Jozef Murgaš Room is located at the Alley Center for Health Sciences and was dedicated by the Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania and King’s College. Inside, visitors can view artifacts that document Murgaš’s life and accomplishments. The collection includes his priestly vestments, his desk, reproductions of his paintings and items from his extensive butterfly collection. Panels depict the towers used during his 1905 transmission. The room also includes a stained glass butterfly ceiling panel created in the Tiffany tradition by Helfran Glass Co. of Edwardsville.
Additional displays outside the room include a collage of paintings, newspaper articles and commemorative items, offering even more context on Murgaš’s legacy.
