Frances Slocum State Park — outdoor recreation just ten miles outside of Wilkes-Barre

Frances Slocum State Park is one of 18 NEPA state parks and a beloved outdoor destination just 10 miles from Wilkes-Barre. With over 1,000 acres of lush forests, wetlands, and open meadows, it offers something for every outdoor enthusiast. The 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake serves as the centerpiece of the park and offers year-round recreational opportunities.

The park features 13.7 miles of scenic hiking trails for all skill levels. The Lakeshore Trail offers a leisurely, level path along the water’s edge, while the Deer Trail provides a more immersive journey through fields and forests—perfect for a fall foliage hike. Several trails are open to mountain biking, making this a top destination for riders seeking wooded paths and open views.

Frances Slocum Lake

Frances Slocum is a popular NEPA fishing spot, especially known for trout fishing in spring and ice fishing during the winter months. Anglers can enjoy year-round access to the well-stocked lake. In warmer months, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats are available for rent, making it a great summer activity on the water.

Family Fun off the Trails

Families can spend a full day swimming at the park’s large pool complex, which includes a wading pool and bathhouse. Numerous shaded picnic areas with grills make it ideal for group outings.

The park offers modern camping with tent and trailer sites, some with electric hookups. Year-round programming by park educators offers hands-on learning about ecology, wildlife, and the area’s rich history.

Frances Slocum State Park is a top Luzerne County outdoor destination for hiking, fishing, boating, biking, and family fun no matter the season.
