The Gardner Spencer Preserve in Dalton spans 82 acres of peaceful woodland, connecting Lackawanna State Park and the Ziegler Preserve. Managed by the Countryside Conservancy, this preserve invites visitors to explore a tranquil natural landscape filled with towering hemlocks, open meadows, and winding brooks. It’s an ideal setting for hiking, biking, and observing wildlife throughout the seasons.
Scenic Trails for Every Explorer
The preserve features 2.6 miles of machine-built trails designed for both hiking and mountain biking. Each route offers a unique experience—from shaded forest paths to open field views. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing walk beneath old-growth trees or take on a more challenging ride along the brook. The trails were developed in partnership with the Lackawanna State Park Trail Crew and DirtSculpt LLC, ensuring a quality outdoor experience for all skill levels. Birdwatchers and photographers will also find the preserve rich with native species and scenic backdrops.
Plan Your Visit
Access to the Gardner Spencer Preserve is available through the Ziegler Preserve parking area on PA Route 438, about one mile east of Route 407. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. Visitors are asked to stay on marked trails and respect any closures due to wet conditions.
