Lackawanna River Adventures Start at Sweeney’s Beach

Sweeney’s Beach in Scranton is your starting point for adventure on the Lackawanna River, a top outdoor activities destination in Lackawanna County. Located on the east bank in the Pine Brook neighborhood, this riverside park is ideal for paddling, fishing or simply relaxing by the water. It’s a favorite local destination for outdoor enthusiasts, especially during trout season when the river is stocked.

Easy Lackawanna River Access for Paddle Sports and Fishing

Sweeney’s Beach features a boat launch designed for non-motorized watercraft like kayaks and canoes. Walking paths lead directly down to the river’s edge, offering safe, convenient access to gravel bars that make launching and withdrawing boats easy. Anglers also enjoy the site’s excellent shoreline access for casting into the river’s cool, flowing waters. It’s a great spot for beginners and experienced outdoor adventurers alike.

Parking and Directions

Visitors will find convenient parking right at the site. To get there, turn west onto Poplar Street from Wyoming Avenue near Scranton Prep. Follow Poplar Street until it ends at the river, turn left, and continue 800 feet along the gravel driveway directly along the riverbank to reach the Sweeney’s Beach parking area. The entrance is adjacent to 40 Poplar Street, easily accessible from downtown Scranton.

A Revitalized Riverfront Destination

The Lackawanna River Conservation Association (LRCA) has played a key role in restoring Sweeney’s Beach, transforming it into a welcoming destination for outdoor recreation and community gatherings. The site now hosts annual events like Riverfest, which celebrates the Lackawanna River with paddling trips, live entertainment and family-friendly activities. Sweeney’s Beach is also home to Shiverfest, a popular cold-weather kayak race that draws paddlers and spectators from across the region.

Whether you’re launching a kayak, casting a line or attending a lively festival, Sweeney’s Beach offers a scenic and active connection to the Lackawanna River.
