It’s easy to escape into nature at Locust Lake State Park in Barnesville. The slopes of Locust Mountain practically cradle the pristine waters of the lake, creating a scene that’s worthy of a postcard.

With the laidback atmosphere and natural beauty, Locust Lake is the kind of place that families return year after year. The lake offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming, while serene hiking trails meander along the mountainside and through the forests.

Boating & Fishing

At 52 acres, Locust Lake is the centerpiece of the park. The lake is open to electric motors only, which helps keep the waters calm. A boat rental stand is open seasonally, offering kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, pedal boats and rowboats.

Locust Lake also provides a nice little fishing spot. The lake is stocked with brown trout and brook trout several times throughout the year.

Swimming Beach

In the summer, the beach at Locust Lake is the perfect place to beat the heat. Families love to spend sunny afternoons playing in the sand and splashing in the cool water. The beach is typically open from late May to mid-September.

Bicycle Trail

The bicycle trail is a paved 1.3-mile loop around the lake. It’s the only trail in the park that allows biking, although walkers are welcome too.

The bicycle trail follows the shore and passes park amenities like a playground, the beach and the amphitheater. It even crosses over the dam, where you’ll enjoy a sweeping view of the lake.

The trail is flat and easy, making it a great choice for a family stroll or a bike ride with the kids. According to the park website, it’s also ADA accessible and stroller-friendly. Parts of the trail follow the campground roads, so make sure to watch for traffic.

Oak Loop Trail

For a more challenging hike, try the Oak Loop Trail. This trail will take you beyond the hub of the lake and into the heart of the forest. Going clockwise, the trail leads you along Locust Creek, a scenic stream that empties into the lake. From there, it begins a steep climb up the mountain and follows the ridge.

The entire loop is 2.2 miles long. For a shorter hike, take connector trails like the Ridge Trail or the Hemlock Trail.

Spending time outdoors is lots of fun, but protecting NEPA’s natural beauty makes it even more rewarding. You can do your part by joining the Friends of Tuscarora and Locust Lake State Parks. This nonprofit organization has volunteer opportunities for everyone, no matter what your talents.
