Discover the Refreshing Tranquility of Nature with a Winter Hike
If you’re under the impression that hiking is just a 3-season activity in NEPA, you need to pull on the long socks, lace up the insulated boots, layer up, glove up and get outside for a truly memorable winter hike. From icy waterfalls and snow-packed meadows to frosted treetops and frozen lakes, you just won’t want it to end. Of course, it’ll eventually have to because there’s hot chocolate waiting in the car.
We set out on a few winter hikes at some of the most scenic state parks, natural areas and hiking trails throughout NEPA. Check out this list of cool spots to take in the region’s beautiful, snowy scenery.
Take in peaceful forest views along Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails in Hazle Township. The 4.5-mile, out-and-back rail trail features a flat surface, rest areas, and passes a large reservoir.
Capture beautiful winter water views around every turn on the 3.5-mile Lake Scranton Walking Trail in Scranton. This paved loop trail offers picturesque views of the lake, mountains and trees.
Enjoy frozen marshes and some of PA’s largest spruce forests on a winter stroll at the Thomas Darling Preserve in Blakeslee. The 2.2-mile loop trail also includes raised boardwalks.
Breathe in all the fresh, cold mountain air with a chilly hike at Lackawanna State Park in North Abington Twp. The 2-mile Frost Hollow Trail features dramatic views of the dam.
Take a scenic winter loop around the lake at Locust Lake State Park in Barnesville. The popular Bicycle Trail offers an easy, paved, 1.3-mile walk with beautiful views of the lake and forest.
Soak in the quiet of NEPA in winter at Bruce Lake Natural Area in the Delaware State Forest in Greentown. The Bruce Lake Trail runs through dense forests to a gorgeous glacial lake.
Keep an eye out for expansive lake views, icy waterfalls and more on a chilly hike at Prompton State Park in Prompton. See most of the park using the 1.8 West Shore Trail North.
Explore the vast, open wintry landscape along the 9.2-mile Black Diamond Trailhead of the D&L Trail in Wright Twp. The relatively flat, crushed stone trail features various ponds and bogs.
Stroll through a winter wonderland at Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area in Blakeslee. Hop on the 1-mile Highland Trail for views of Tobyhanna Creek and the towering pine forest.
Make your way through snow-dusted pines on a snowy hike at Tuscarora State Park in Barnesville. Try the 2.3-mile Lake View Trail for views of the lake, streams and the forest.
