A Peek Into the Mountain Top Region’s Past

Mountain Top, PA, has deep roots in the lumber industry, with early settlements supplying timber to Wilkes-Barre and supporting regional growth. White Haven played a key role as a transportation link during the rise of anthracite mining, connecting the Wyoming Valley to emerging communities across the Pocono Mountains region. Railroads, mills, and natural resources shaped the area that would become today’s Mountain Top region. Historical societies and park educators continue to share this heritage through tours and educational programs at Eckley Miners’ Village and regional trail centers.

Did You Know?

The first iron grate to successfully burn anthracite coal in the Valley was created by Wilkes-Barre Judge Jesse Fell on February 11, 1808 in the borough of White Haven. His invention increased the popularity of anthracite as a fuel source and led to the expansion of the coal industry in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
