Keeping History Alive

Step back in time at one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s most popular National Parks. The Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton offers a unique glimpse into America’s fascinating transportation history. Get a close up look at the marvelous machines that fueled America’s industrial revolution and eventually put NEPA on the map. With interactive exhibits, knowledgeable park rangers, and real, working trains, you’ll find something new on every visit.

Guided Tours

Park Rangers and volunteers conduct walking tours covering various topics throughout the museum. The 45-minute Locomotive Shop Tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at what makes the rail yard work. When you arrive, be sure to check at the Information Kiosk for daily featured tours.

On the Inside

Learn all about the history and technology of steam railroading inside Steamtown’s world-class museum. Meet the people who kept the railroad running in the Life on the Railroad Exhibit. You’ll see them all, from the Conductor to the Fireman and everyone in between.

The museum also features several interactive rail car exhibits. Explore a fancy dining car, or pretend you’re sorting letters in the Railway Post Office. Watch real train mechanics work on the massive steam engines inside the Roundhouse.

And discover what it takes to make those giant engines run in the Technology Museum. From cross-sectioned locomotives to the actual production of steam, this section of the museum will have you looking at trains in a whole new light.

The Rail Yard

Stroll through over 40 acres of the former Scranton Yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Guests can access the entire yard whenever the park is open. There are plenty of retired trains, tables and benches. And do not miss the opportunity to see the amazing train turntable in action as it helps to bring those massive steam engines into the Roundhouse.

Take a Ride

Enjoy an old-fashioned train ride on the Scranton Limited. This quick, 3-mile ride from the rail yard to the University of Scranton passes over the scenic Lackawanna River. On specific Sundays, the Scranton Limited transforms into the Nay Aug Limited. This trip extends the usual ride to include a stop above the beautiful Nay Aug Park Gorge and Waterfall.

Steamtown also offers Excursion Train rides. These are considerably longer trips, and they are subject to seasonal availability. Excursions may include day trips to Moscow, PA and Delaware Water Gap. Check with the Information Kiosk for an updated list of excursions or e-mail the park at stea_visitor_information@nps.gov
