Mission Statement

To provide immersive environmental education and recreation that engages, educates and enlightens the community to their natural world, while preserving open space and natural areas.

Located on private property in Lehman Township, the 18-acre Lehman Sanctuary is a hidden, rare, diverse ecosystem in the Back Mountain of Luzerne County. Owned and cared for by the Miller family, the land is a unique area of old growth forested wetlands with 200+ year old Oaks and Eastern Pine, natural prairie grass, wildflower meadows and a thriving wildlife habitat. The forest canopy in a designated Exceptional Values forested wetlands and protects pristine vernal pools, spring seeps, and streams – home to rare amphibians, like the Four Toed Salamander. The Lehman Sanctuary is private land and available by appointment only.

The nonprofit delivers vital environmental education and fun field trips to schools and community groups who are welcome to connect with nature and wildlife conservation and experience a truly rare and diverse ecosystem with hands-on learning. A two-time awardee of the Environmental Partnership Award of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, the Lehman Sanctuary’s STEM curriculum includes studies on habitat, wildlife, environmental biology, watersheds, stormwater, amphibians, ornithology, entomology, flora and fauna.
