Explore NEPA’s Role in the Underground Railroad

Destination Freedom is a self-guided walking tour that shows how the small village of Waverly played a key role in the Underground Railroad Movement. The tour delves into NEPA’s history, telling the stories of local abolitionists and the formerly enslaved people who settled in Waverly.

The tour begins at the Waverly Community House. The past comes to life as you stop at historic homes and sites, such as the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Using extensive research, this tour helps the public understand life in the Civil War era and how it relates to our world today.

Maps are available at the Waverly Community House. You can also schedule guided group tours or join a public program for an interactive and engaging experience.
