According to a plaque on Public Square, Wilkes-Barre made history in 1951 when it hosted the nation’s first jazz festival. The event, dubbed The Cavalcade of Dixieland Jazz, has been revived for 2024, and the F.M. Kirby Center is hosting two of the festival’s events!
Our Chandelier Lobby will host Wilkes-Barre Cavalcade of Jazz’s opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 3. The event is free and open to the public, so come enjoy a cocktail hour featuring live music by Joe Michaels Trio!
Saturday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Come back to our lobby at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, for a limited engagement featuring 10-time Grammy Award winner Arturo Sandoval playing with the Cavalcade of Jazz Big Band under the direction of Marko Marcinko! In his early years, Sandoval was inspired by jazz master Dizzy Gillespie’s fusion of Latin elements with American jazz. The Cuban-born trumpeter, pianist, and composer then developed his own sound—an effort that led to collaborations with artists like Tony Bennett, Alicia Keys, and even Gillespie himself!
General admission seating for Arturo Sandoval is $50 per ticket. A limited number of $35 standing room-only tickets are available.
