Butler Preserve | Wetlands, forests & rare habitats in Hazle Township

Butler Preserve in Hazle Township spans 118 acres along the scenic Dreck Creek Reservoir and is protected by the North Branch Land Trust. This preserved landscape is an ecological gem, showcasing globally rare scrub oak barrens, lush wetlands, and a thriving riparian forest. Open to the public, the property offers a quiet escape where visitors can explore, observe wildlife, and connect with nature.

Ecological Treasure & Outdoor Recreation

The preserve’s diverse ecosystem supports unique plant and animal life found only in a few places worldwide. The Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails runs through about half a mile of the property, providing opportunities for hiking, biking, and birdwatching. Along the route, visitors can spot native songbirds, deer, and other wildlife that depend on this rare habitat.

Access to Butler Preserve is available through the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails, with parking areas located along East Broad Street and Stockton Mountain Road. The trail offers beautiful views of Dreck Creek Reservoir and its surrounding wetlands. Managed in partnership with local and state conservation organizations, the preserve reflects an ongoing commitment to protecting Northeastern Pennsylvania’s most sensitive landscapes.
