Rifkin Hall is a distinguished example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Constructed in 1875, the mansion was designed by architect Bruce Price for the Murray Reynolds family. Price, who later achieved prominence in New York City, was commissioned by the prominent local family, reflecting the affluence of Wilkes-Barre’s industrial elite during the Gilded Age.

Today, Rifkin Hall is owned by Wilkes University, and it is used it as a residence hall for undergraduate students. The university offers tours of its historic buildings, including Rifkin Hall, providing insights into their architectural and historical importance.

Architectural Significance

The mansion showcases High Victorian Gothic elements, characterized by its ornate detailing and asymmetrical design. Notably, Colonel Robert B. Ricketts, a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, lumber baron, and early conservationist who donated Ricketts Glen State Park to the state of Pennsylvania, also resided here.
