Hidden away in the northwestern region of Luzerne County is one of our areas most picturesque state parks. Nestled among the verdant hills and rolling mountains in Wyoming, and just ten miles from Wilkes-Barre, this secluded gem boasts magnificent natural beauty.

Frances Slocum State Park, named after a young girl who was kidnapped by Native Americans in the late 18th century, spans out over 1,035-acres and features the iconic 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake. Lush green fields, woodlands, forests, marshes and wetlands await your visit. Explore 14 miles of peaceful hiking trails or take in the park’s splendor by kayak or boat.

The focal point of the park is the beautiful 165-acre Frances Slocum Lake, which can be seen from nearly every section of the park. Surrounded by lush forests and campsites, the lake’s size and beauty make boating, fishing, and kayaking popular activities. The lake features two boat launches, two mooring areas, and an ADA-accesible fishing pier. Rowboats, paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes are available for rent. Only electric or non-powered boats are permitted.

The Frances Slocum Trail is one of the most popular experiences within Frances Slocum State Park, offering a mix of natural beauty and historical significance. Explore the notable rock shelter where Frances Slocum took refuge on her first night of captivity along this trail. The 0.7-mile trek begins and ends at the boat rental parking lot.

Larch Tree Trail

The Larch Tree Trail offers a magical and mystical experience as you step into a towering stand of old-growth pine and larch trees. This slightly hilly, 2-mile loop winds through a dense forest, providing an exceptional setting for a peaceful journey beneath the towering canopy. The trail begins near the shore of Frances Slocum Lake, just off Campground Road.

Deer Trail image
Deer Trail

For a more challenging hike with a view, the Deer Trail offers three loops of varying lengths: 1.3 miles, 2.5 miles, or 3.9 miles. The trail starts at the Environmental Education Center and passes through diverse habitats, including lakeshore, thicket, mixed forest, and hardwood forest, as well as across concrete stepping stones in the marsh. The stepping stones provide a great photo opportunity, and you’ll find plenty of peace and solitude during the quieter times of day.

The park is a favorite destination for camping enthusiasts. The campgrounds are close to the lake and boat launch but are nestled in the forest on the far side of the lake. Open from mid-April through late October, the park offers 100 sites for RVs, trailers, and tent camping.

Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with larger sites featuring electric hookups. The park has a modern bathhouse with showers, flushable toilets, drinking water, and boat launch access. Additionally, there is a large group tenting area that accommodates up to 40 tents.

Vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold blanket the landscape throughout the park. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the views by the lake, the peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery create the perfect setting to embrace this radiant season.

Mountain biking at Frances Slocum State Park features 5 miles of trails on the park’s west side, catering to all skill levels from easy to challenging. The trails are marked with red blazes, guiding bikers through diverse terrains and scenic landscapes.

On a beautiful day, there’s nothing better than a picnic in the park. There are plenty of open spaces, picnic tables, and covered pavilions for spreading out with family and friends.

The picnic sites feature tables and charcoal grills, with water fountains and restrooms nearby. Picnic spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, except for three pavilions that can be reserved in advance for a fee.

A trip to the pool is the perfect way to cool off on a summer day. Conveniently located next to the playground, the pool facility features a spacious swimming area with a shallow one-foot entry for little ones and two exciting, twisty slides for the big kids.

Frances Slocum State Park is a great spot for water fun! You can bring your own or rent a kayak, canoe, or paddle boat to cruise around the peaceful lake. If fishing is your thing, try your luck for bass, trout, and more from the lake’s accessible fishing pier or along the shoreline.

With its calm waters and beautiful scenery, it’s a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy a day by the water.

For nature lovers, the lake, vernal pools, wetlands, and forests provide a home to many species of birds, fish, and wildlife.

From animals like white-tailed deer and painted turtles to birds such as great blue herons, Baltimore orioles, and yellow warblers (and the occasional bald eagle), plus a lake stocked with catfish, bass, and trout, there is plenty here to capture your attention.

Frances Slocum State Park transforms into a snowy wonderland with a range of wintery activities. Enjoy ice fishing and ice skating on the frozen lake or explore the trails for cross-country skiing popular along Campground Road.
