Turkey, Trot and Tradition

Every Thanksgiving, as families prepare to gather around their tables for a holiday feast, hundreds of runners come together in Berwick to take part in a different kind of tradition: the Run For The Diamonds.

Since 1908, this iconic race has transformed Thanksgiving Day in Berwick, combining the spirit of gratitude and community into one of the oldest road races in America. The first race saw just 13 runners; today, over 2,000 runners will line up to take on the historic 9-mile course. In its remarkable 116-year history, the race has been canceled only twice, in 1918 and 1919, during World War I. For both participants and spectators, the Run For The Diamonds offers a meaningful start to a day centered on coming together.

Race Route

Run For The Diamonds course takes participants through scenic Berwick, showcasing the town’s charming neighborhoods and surrounding countryside. The route spans 9.2 miles and is known for being challenging. The route has remained relatively unchanged for decades, preserving the race’s historic roots. Runners will navigate a series of rolling hills, which provide a true test of endurance and speed. The course finishes downtown, where runners are met with post-race festivities and awards.

The race starts on Market Street in Berwick and heads north for about a mile before turning onto Summerhill Road, which becomes Foundryville Road as it passes through the municipality of Foundryville. Around mile 2, runners encounter a long and steep incline known as “The Hill.” After cresting the hill at approximately mile 3.5, the course descends toward the halfway point, where it turns onto Kachinka Hollow Road and continues downhill to Martzville Road at mile 7. From there, the course follows Martzville Road back to Market Street, finishing with a final mile along Market Street.

Diamonds Are A Runner’s Best Friend

This year, the competition is fierce, with a $3,000 cash prize for male and female runners who break the current course record. Top male and female finishers (1st through 7th place) are awarded diamond rings and pendants, while runners finishing 8th through 15th place receive commemorative plaques.
