Delaware River

Three girls wearing life jackets are paddling a canoe on the Delaware River within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, with lush green trees lining the riverbank.

The National Park Service protects over 100 miles along the NEPA border

The Delaware River forms Pennsylvania’s eastern border and offers two premier sections for paddlesports: the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Both are part of the National Park System and provide excellent opportunities for river exploration. Kayak and canoe rentals are easy to find, while rafts are a popular choice for families and groups.

The Upper Delaware stretches approximately 73 miles, beginning in the state’s northeastern corner and running to just north of Matamoras. The water varies from calm stretches to gentle riffles and occasional Class I and II rapids. Surrounded by scenic mountains—with the Pocono Mountains on one side and the New York Catskills on the other—it’s a stunning place to paddle.

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area runs along the Pennsylvania–New Jersey border from Milford to just south of the town of Delaware Water Gap. This section is known for iconic views, including the steep, forested slopes of Mount Minsi and the dramatic cliffs at the Point of Gap.
